Music composer Ilaiyaraaja has faced a setback in the Supreme Court over the copyright dispute surrounding the popular song ‘En Iniya Pon Nilave’ from the film ‘Moodu Pani’. A bench comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K. Vinod Chandran dismissed his plea challenging the Delhi High Court’s order in the matter. The Supreme Court held that Ilaiyaraaja’s rights are limited to the musical composition of the song.
The court also upheld the Delhi High Court’s order favouring Saregama, which had obtained the sound recording rights from the film’s producer. It reiterated that the lyrics and sound recording rights do not belong to Ilaiyaraaja. The Supreme Court also dismissed his plea concerning the licensing dispute over the recreated version of the song in the film ‘Aghathiyaa’, providing legal relief to music label Saregama.
