The Gauhati High Court has ruled that a PAN Card and Voter ID alone are not sufficient to prove Indian citizenship. Upholding the decision of a Foreigners Tribunal in an Assam case, the Court stated that individuals claiming Indian citizenship must produce credible documentary evidence establishing their lineage to Indian ancestors who lived in the country before 1971.
The Court clarified that identity documents such as PAN Cards and Voter IDs only establish identity and are not conclusive proof of citizenship. It emphasized that citizenship claims must be supported by legally admissible evidence as per the applicable laws, reaffirming the legal standards for determining Indian citizenship.
