Hyderabad police have stepped up their crackdown on alleged illegal liquor sales in Borabanda, where unauthorised belt shops have reportedly continued operating despite repeated raids and legal action. According to the report, authorities are now invoking the stringent Preventive Detention (PD) Act against alleged repeat offenders rather than relying solely on regular cases and bind-over proceedings. Vemula Sarala, a resident of Banjara Nagar who was allegedly involved in running an unauthorised liquor business for several years, was booked under the PD Act on September 26.
In the latest action, police invoked the same law against C.H. Maria, also known as Mary, who allegedly operated an illegal liquor outlet in Vinayak Rao Nagar. She was reportedly sent to jail on Thursday. The action against two women allegedly involved in unauthorised liquor sales within a 15-day period has become a topic of discussion in the locality. It has also reportedly sent a warning to other belt-shop operators as police continue their efforts to curb illegal liquor sales.
