Hyderabad Police Commissioner Sajjanar has issued a warning about emerging cyber fraud techniques, cautioning people against responding to suspicious bank transaction messages. According to his post on X, cybercriminals are allegedly exploiting WhatsApp messages and a technique described as an “auto-execution file attack” to gain control of mobile phones and steal money. Fraudsters reportedly send fake alerts claiming that money has been debited from a bank account and ask recipients to reply “YES” or “NO” if they did not make the transaction. Sajjanar warned that responding to such messages could expose users to malicious scripts and put their financial information at risk.
The police commissioner cited a recent incident in which ₹1 lakh was reportedly stolen from a chartered accountant’s account and urged the public to remain vigilant. He advised people not to respond to bank transaction alerts received from unknown numbers. If a debit message appears suspicious, users should verify their account statement through the bank’s official app and contact only the bank’s verified customer care service if further clarification is needed. Anyone who loses money to cyber fraud should immediately call 1930 or file a complaint through the official website, cybercrime.gov.in.
