With children increasingly developing a taste for junk food and concerns growing over childhood obesity, some cafes are giving popular favourites such as pizzas and burgers a healthier makeover. Instead of refined flour, they are incorporating nutritious millets so that children can enjoy familiar flavours while receiving better nutritional value. Some kid-friendly cafes are also creating engaging spaces with popular cartoon characters and interactive experiences. At a Chhota Bheem-themed cafe in Hyderabad’s Jubilee Hills, children are being offered specially prepared “Signature Power Laddus” made with dry fruits and nutritious ingredients, inspired by the laddus associated with the popular cartoon character. Healthy Bento Boxes comprising breakfast and lunch options are also being supplied directly to schools.
Beyond food, such cafes are also focusing on creativity, social interaction and practical skills among children. Special “Junior Chef” programmes conducted under expert supervision allow youngsters to prepare simple dishes themselves, turning cooking into an enjoyable life skill rather than a chore. Games, workshops and group activities can also encourage children to spend time away from digital screens and interact with their peers. Chhota Bheem Cafe founder Ch. Rajeev said the concept aims to create a space where parents can relax or attend to their activities while children enjoy nutritious food, cooking experiences and creativity-building games in an engaging environment.
