How Did This House Survive Nepal’s Devastating Floods?

A green-coloured house owned by a man named Prakash has emerged as a remarkable sight after devastating floods hit Nepal’s Nuwakot district. While nearby buildings, vehicles and other belongings were swept away by the raging waters of the Trishuli River, the house remained largely intact, leaving many surprised. Photos and videos of the house have since gone viral. Prakash said he rushed home from his shop as soon as he learned that the floodwater was rising rapidly. Five members of his family were inside the house, and although he asked everyone to come outside, they returned indoors after witnessing their vehicle being overturned by the force of the water. He said the family feared their lives were in danger. As the water level continued to rise, they first moved to the fourth floor and later took shelter on the rooftop. Prakash also said he was deeply worried about his son, who had gone to school during the floods.

According to Prakash, the house survived mainly because of its strong construction and foundation. Built around 40 years ago, the house was constructed using what he described as high-quality cement and building materials available at the time. Since the property was located close to the river, the family invested heavily in strengthening its foundation. They placed road-construction material in two to three layers beneath the foundation, which he believes helped the structure withstand the powerful floodwaters. However, the lower portion of the house was being used as a warehouse for his shop, and all the goods stored there, along with two cars, bikes and scooters, were washed away. After being trapped for nearly an hour to an hour and a half, the water level eventually receded slightly. Local residents from the nearby toll area then placed a pipe between the buildings and used a rope to safely rescue Prakash and his family.
