The Telangana High Court has issued notices to GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan in connection with orders directing slaughterhouses and meat shops in Hyderabad to remain closed on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti. The notice was issued while hearing a contempt petition filed by V. Srikanth of Tarnaka, who alleged that the GHMC had issued the closure orders without following the provisions of the GHMC Act.
The petitioner’s counsel argued that the latest orders were contrary to directions issued by the High Court in February, which required GHMC to follow the prescribed legal procedure before issuing restrictions. The counsel also sought a penalty of ₹50,000 for alleged violation of the court’s directions. After hearing the arguments, Justice N.V. Shravan Kumar directed the GHMC Commissioner to explain his position and issued notices. The court adjourned the matter to November 2 for further hearing.
