Amid the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, reports have surfaced about an alleged assassination attempt on Russian President Vladimir Putin, one of the most heavily protected leaders in the world. According to sources in Moscow, the incident reportedly took place a few months ago near his private residence in the Novgorod region. Intelligence agencies indicated that there were plots to eliminate him, but the information was kept confidential due to security reasons. Following this, Russia’s Federal Protective Service (FSO) significantly tightened security around Putin and reduced his public appearances.
Since the beginning of the war with Ukraine, Putin is believed to have been operating largely from underground bunkers while overseeing military operations. Reports suggest that mobile phones and internet-enabled devices are restricted in his vicinity to prevent surveillance threats. In response to potential Ukrainian drone attacks, FSO agents have intensified security checks and deployed forces along the Moscow River. Security measures for several top officials have also been enhanced. However, intelligence agencies from the United States and Ukraine have dismissed claims of a direct assassination attempt on Putin. Notably, this is not the first time such reports have emerged regarding threats to his life.
