Heavy Rains in Sikkim Trigger Floods and Landslides

Heavy rains triggered floods and landslides across several parts of Sikkim on Thursday night. In Rimbi village under the Yuksom-Tashiding area of West Sikkim, landslides damaged several houses, while debris and muddy floodwater flowed into low-lying areas, disrupting vehicular movement. Officials said there were no casualties in the incident. The India Meteorological Department has forecast more rain over the next few days. Heavy rainfall was also reported in the capital Gangtok, where low-lying areas were inundated and landslides affected roads.

Officials from the Gangtok District Disaster Management Authority inspected the affected areas and assessed the damage. They visited Rimbi village and interacted with families whose houses were damaged. They also inspected several locations, including the Luying-Ranka Highway near Bojoghari, Lingding, High Court Road, TNA Gate, VIP Colony, Pangthang-Lingdok Road, Pamrong Gaon and Phenzong. Landslides and floods disrupted road connectivity in several parts of West Sikkim, while public infrastructure, including a sewage treatment plant in Sichey, was also damaged. Authorities directed officials to clear mud and debris from roads quickly, provide assistance to affected residents and avoid further risks. People have been advised to stay away from landslide-prone areas and avoid travelling at night.
