Tamil Nadu is experiencing heavy to extremely heavy rainfall under the influence of the northeast monsoon, with Chennai among the worst-affected areas. According to the provided report, the city recorded 36 centimetres of rainfall in the 24 hours between Saturday morning and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. This is reportedly Chennai’s highest rainfall since Cyclone Michaung struck the region in 2023. The intense downpour has raised concerns about waterlogging in low-lying neighbourhoods, flooding on roads and disruptions to traffic and daily life.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Chennai and neighbouring districts, warning of the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, along with very heavy rainfall in Chennai. Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely as the weather system continues to affect the region. Residents, particularly those in low-lying areas, should follow official advisories, avoid travelling through flooded roads and stay indoors unless travel is essential. People are also advised to monitor updates from the IMD and local authorities for the latest rainfall and flood warnings.
