Green Aviation Push: Akasa Air Operates First Flight With SAF Blend

Akasa Air has successfully operated its first commercial flight using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supplied by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). The Mumbai–Goa flight operated on September 8 used a blend containing 1% SAF along with conventional Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), marking an important step towards the adoption of cleaner aviation fuels in India. The flight departed from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai at 1:05 pm and arrived in Goa at 2:30 pm.

The initiative is part of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Akasa Air and BPCL in July 2026. Both companies are expected to gain practical experience from the SAF-blended flight, which could support wider adoption of sustainable aviation fuel in the future. India has set a target of achieving a 5% SAF blending rate by 2030, making such initiatives an important part of the country’s efforts to reduce emissions from the aviation sector.
