

A total of 1,057 personnel from the Police, Fire Services, Home Guard and Civil Defence, and Correctional Services have been selected for Gallantry and Service Medals on the occasion of Independence Day 2026, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. The awards recognise personnel who have displayed exceptional courage and dedication in the line of duty, as well as those who have rendered distinguished service in their respective departments.
Among the awardees are 141 police personnel from Chhattisgarh. As many as 35 Bastar Fighter Constables have also been selected for Gallantry Medals. The Bastar Fighters are a specialised force comprising local residents, surrendered Maoists and victims of Maoist violence. Their inclusion highlights the role of personnel working in challenging security environments. The medals will honour courage, commitment and distinguished service rendered in protecting citizens and maintaining security.
