Govt to Issue Notices to Telegram and Signal Over Username Feature

After issuing a notice to WhatsApp over its Username feature, the Central Government is now preparing to send similar notices to Telegram and Signal. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will seek detailed explanations from both platforms regarding the implementation of the Username feature.

The government wants clarity on the security, identity verification, and potential misuse of usernames. The move comes amid concerns that the feature could be exploited for impersonation, fraud, and cybercrime if adequate safeguards are not in place.
