Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for traditional government service delivery systems to evolve in line with the speed of artificial intelligence. Addressing the centenary celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in New Delhi, he said citizens no longer want to wait for weeks or months for government services. With AI capable of processing thousands of documents within moments and governments having access to real-time data, people increasingly expect faster solutions. Modi called for changes in civil services selection and recruitment processes to meet future requirements. He said recruitment examinations should assess not only a candidate’s knowledge but also their motivation for joining the civil services and their commitment to public service.
Modi said modern governance should place citizens at the centre and urged officials to follow the principles of “Nation First” and “Citizen First.” He said the work culture of 21st-century India should be based on pro-people, proactive and good governance. He also called on examination bodies to shorten recruitment timelines and provide greater certainty in the examination process, noting that prolonged schedules can increase candidates’ expenses on coaching, accommodation and transportation. During the centenary celebrations, Modi released a commemorative coin, postage stamp and a book marking 100 years of the UPSC.
