The Telangana state government is promoting fine rice cultivation by offering a bonus of ₹500 per quintal to farmers growing selected varieties. From this season, the bonus will be applicable only for seven approved paddy varieties instead of the earlier 33. Officials said the decision aims to promote high yielding and market demand varieties. Seed fairs are being conducted across mandal level farmer centers to create awareness among farmers.
The eligible varieties include BPT-5204, RNR-15048, KNM-1638, Jaya Shriram, HMT Sona, Warangal-44, and KNM-7715. During the 2024 Kharif season, fine rice cultivation covered over 70% of the area, with ₹105 crore bonus paid, while in 2025 it increased to 85%, reaching ₹130 crore. Opposition parties criticized the restriction, but the government said it is focused on quality production and market demand.
