The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) has directed officials to take effective measures to control plastic use and prevent the accumulation of plastic waste during the upcoming Godavari Pushkarams. On Thursday, PCB Chairman P. Krishnaiah held a video conference from the PCB office with East Godavari District Collector Keerthi, the Rajamahendravaram Municipal Commissioner and representatives of various beverage companies. The meeting focused on plastic waste management, drinking water supply and the promotion of environmentally friendly alternatives. Krishnaiah stressed the need for comprehensive measures to prevent plastic waste from piling up during the Godavari Pushkarams, which are expected to draw large crowds similar to the Kumbh Mela.
Krishnaiah urged officials and beverage companies to encourage alternatives that would reduce the use of plastic water bottles as much as possible. He directed PCB officials to maintain detailed records of the number of plastic bottles sold, the number collected after use and the quantity sent for recycling. He also called for the implementation of a comprehensive action plan to ensure that used plastic bottles are collected and recycled scientifically. The initiative aims to improve waste management, reduce plastic pollution and protect the environment during the large-scale religious event.
