France’s Under-15 Social Media Ban Proposal Faces Constitutional Setback

France’s plan to restrict social media access for children under the age of 15 has suffered a constitutional setback. The country’s Constitutional Council rejected the proposed legislation, raising concerns that the measure could infringe on freedom of expression. It also noted that age-verification requirements could create difficulties and inconvenience for adults.

Despite the decision, the French government has said it remains committed to strengthening online safety for children. President Emmanuel Macron has instructed the Prime Minister to draft a new bill in line with the Constitutional Council’s recommendations.
