Protests demanding reforms in France’s education system have intensified, with violent incidents reported in several cities. Near central Paris, demonstrators allegedly set a car and a shop on fire. Police deployed tear gas and water cannons in an attempt to disperse the crowds and restore order. In Lyon, France’s third-largest city, a tourist office was reportedly set ablaze, while in Marseille, a police station and several shops were vandalised. Police said 166 people had been arrested nationwide in connection with the unrest, according to the information provided.
The demonstrations have been driven by demands for better school facilities, measures to address teacher shortages, increased education funding and the renovation of deteriorating school buildings. University students have also joined the protests, raising concerns about the complexity of the higher education admissions system. Trade unions have reportedly extended their support to the movement. Reports of fires at schools and damage to public property have further heightened concerns over the escalating unrest and the need to address the issues affecting France’s education system.
