A foreign traveller named Jane shared her experiences of Indian hospitality on her Instagram account, ‘Jane Ki Khoj’. Contrary to the common perception that tourists are often charged higher prices, Jane said her experience in India was quite different. She recalled several instances where she was charged less than the usual rate. She later learned that a local tea seller had deliberately charged her less because she was a guest. Some restaurants also welcomed her with free sweets, saying, “Welcome to India”.
Jane said the warmth she experienced went beyond discounts and complimentary food. Several strangers invited her to their homes for meals, took her to family weddings and even offered her places to stay. During her first trip, she mostly stayed with Indian families, who later connected her with their relatives and friends in other cities. Although she acknowledged that auto-rickshaw drivers may sometimes overcharge tourists, she said her overall experience was marked by kindness, lower prices and genuine warmth. Her video, titled ‘Undercharging vs Overcharging in India’, received positive reactions on social media, with many users thanking her for sharing the experience.
