Households across Telangana are facing rising expenses ahead of the festive season as the prices of rice, vegetables, pulses and other essential commodities continue to climb. The report attributes the increase partly to inadequate rainfall, changing weather conditions and concerns over the impact of El Niño on crop yields. Limited supplies and growing demand for quality rice have also contributed to higher prices, leaving low-income and middle-class families struggling to manage their monthly budgets.
Rice prices have risen sharply in recent weeks. According to the report, HMT rice, which previously cost Rs. 6,000–6,300 per quintal, is now priced at Rs. 7,600–7,800. Jai Sriram rice has increased from Rs. 6,800–7,000 to Rs. 8,400–8,600 per quintal, while Sona Masoori has risen from around Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 7,000. Several vegetables and pulses have also become more expensive. The report lists beans at Rs. 160 per kg, green chillies at Rs. 120, capsicum at Rs. 100, okra at Rs. 80, tomatoes at Rs. 50 and onions at Rs. 80. Toor dal is reportedly selling for Rs. 160 per kg, while sugar costs Rs. 55–60. Consumers are calling for stronger price monitoring and action against possible hoarding to ease the burden on households.
