Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has defended the action taken against Guru Nanak Dairy & Sweets. He said the Bombay High Court’s order came as a surprise to the department. The FDA is still awaiting the written copy of the court order and will examine it carefully before deciding its next course of action. Mundhe said the department is also considering its legal options.
According to Mundhe, the case followed a food poisoning incident in which several people who consumed sweets from the shop were hospitalised. He said food safety testing found the samples to be “unsafe”, which led the FDA to believe that its action against the shop was justified. Mundhe said the department stands by its action and will decide on further legal steps after studying the detailed court order.
