Family Register Certificate Not Valid for SIR Verification

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has clarified that a Family Register Certificate cannot be accepted as a valid document for voter verification under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The clarification comes after the Telangana government issued orders on July 25 regarding the issuance of Family Register Certificates based on ration card data. The ECI has now made it clear that such certificates cannot be used as proof for SIR verification.

The Chief Election Commissioner has reportedly stated that a Family Register Certificate is equivalent to a ration card and therefore cannot be treated as a separate valid document for the SIR exercise. The clarification is significant for voters undergoing verification as part of the electoral roll revision process. Voters will have to rely on documents recognised by the Election Commission for establishing their eligibility and details in the electoral rolls.
