Cybercriminals are adopting new methods to defraud people through social media, increasingly impersonating prominent individuals and organisations to collect money. In a recent case, fake social media accounts allegedly using the name of Abhijit Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), have come to light. The accounts reportedly imitate the original Instagram profiles by using similar profile pictures and posts. They allegedly approach users in the name of social service and emergency medical assistance, asking them to make donations. The issue has also attracted attention in national media reports.
Abhijit Dipke has reportedly clarified that the fake accounts have no connection with him or his representatives and urged people not to trust such appeals. Cybersecurity experts are warning social media users to remain vigilant against impersonation scams. They advise people to verify donation requests through official websites and verified social media accounts before transferring money. Users should also avoid sharing personal or banking details with suspicious profiles. Any account suspected of impersonation or fraudulent fundraising should be reported through the platform’s reporting tools and the appropriate cybercrime reporting channels.
