The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission has temporarily halted the election process in 100 urban local bodies following directions from the Supreme Court. The suspension covers 13 municipal corporations and 87 municipalities across the state. The Supreme Court has directed that the publication of the final list of candidates be postponed until the 25th of this month. The State Election Commission will examine complaints, documents and other evidence submitted by candidates who were unable to file their nominations.
The commission will specifically consider cases in which candidates were prevented from filing nominations due to law-and-order problems. The SEC is expected to review reports submitted by district collectors, district election officers and police officials before deciding on further action. The Supreme Court has directed that candidates must be given at least 48 additional hours if the nomination deadline is extended. If necessary, the commission will take steps to amend the election notification and extend the nomination period.
