Drugs Threaten Student Communities in Telangana

The growing involvement of students in drug consumption has emerged as a serious concern in Telangana. According to the study cited by the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE), nearly 800 students have been identified as drug users in the state over the past three years, including more than 100 girls. EAGLE teams have provided counselling to these students and referred them to de-addiction centres. Investigations suggest that engineering colleges, reputed universities and hostels are increasingly becoming vulnerable points for drug use. In one recent university inspection, 17 students reportedly tested positive, while at another university, four students were arrested for allegedly supplying drugs and around 50 others were identified as users. Investigators also point to rural educational institutions as an emerging area of concern. Peer influence appears to be a major factor, with around 500 students questioned by investigators reportedly identifying a “friend” as the person who first introduced them to drugs. Birthday parties, pubs, private parties and farmhouses are also being cited as common settings where students are exposed to narcotics.

Alongside awareness programmes, EAGLE teams are conducting surprise inspections at suspected hotspots and educational institutions. Drug Rapid Test Kits are being used for preliminary urine screening, with results available in about 15 minutes. The multi-strip kits can screen for several categories of substances, including amphetamines, opioids, cannabis and benzodiazepines. Students who test positive are taken to hospitals for further testing and evidence collection where required. Authorities subsequently counsel affected students and refer them for treatment at de-addiction centres. The data cited in the report indicates that 598 individuals were identified as users, 68 as suppliers, 43 as both users and suppliers, 32 as transporters and suppliers, six as peddlers, four as peddlers and suppliers, two as transporters, peddlers and suppliers, and 47 under other categories. EAGLE is focusing on greater awareness among both students and parents to prevent young people from falling into drug addiction and related networks.
