Does Worshipping Lord Shiva Remove Poverty? The Significance of Arka Flowers in Shiva Puja

There is a widespread misconception that Lord Shiva, who is depicted as a renunciant and cremation-ground dweller, should not be worshipped by those seeking wealth and prosperity. Traditional Hindu thought, however, presents a different perspective. The word ‘Shivam’ signifies auspiciousness, well-being and prosperity. Devotees therefore believe that sincerely taking refuge in Lord Shiva can bring spiritual strength, peace and auspiciousness.

One traditional spiritual practice associated with relief from financial difficulties is the worship of Lord Shiva with Arka flowers, commonly known as Jilledu flowers in Telugu. In Sanskrit, the flower is referred to as Arka Pushpa or Shvetarka. It is considered sacred and is traditionally associated not only with Lord Shiva but also with Lord Surya and Lord Ganesha. White Arka flowers are especially regarded as auspicious in Shiva worship.

According to traditional belief, devotees seeking relief from poverty may perform this worship on Amavasya, a day considered significant for Shiva worship. The practice involves preparing 108 Arka flowers and offering them to Lord Shiva while reciting the Ashtottara Shatanama, the 108 sacred names. The puja may be performed before a Shiva Lingam or an image of Lord Shiva at home, or devotees may seek the assistance of a priest at a temple.

Devotees traditionally accompany the offering with sincere prayers and the chanting of the Panchakshari mantra, ‘Om Namah Shivaya’. Shiva stotras may also be recited while offering each flower with devotion. According to belief, the ritual is intended to seek relief from financial hardships, debt-related stress and poverty. It is traditionally recommended to continue the practice for at least three Amavasya days.

These practices belong to the realm of religious faith and tradition and should not be considered a guaranteed financial remedy. Along with spiritual practices, practical financial planning and responsible decisions remain important when dealing with economic difficulties. For devotees, however, such worship can provide faith, mental strength, peace and a positive outlook during challenging times.
