DMK Sets Conditions for Delimitation Bill

The DMK is likely to take a crucial stand on the proposed Delimitation Bill, which has become a major political issue across the country. Reports suggest that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin is willing to consider supporting the Constitutional Amendment Bill proposed by the Narendra Modi led Central Government, but only if certain key demands are accepted.

The party has demanded that the 1971 Census, instead of the 2011 Census, remain the basis for Lok Sabha seat delimitation for the next 25 years. It has also called for a uniform 50% increase in Lok Sabha seats for all states, as indicated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Additionally, the DMK wants the Bill to include a state wise list showing the number of seats each state will receive after delimitation. The party has made it clear that it will support the Bill only if the political representation and rights of southern states remain protected.
