Deepa Bhattarai, a Nepal born entrepreneur, has become an inspiration after successfully challenging Mississippi's cosmetology licensing rules in the United States. After moving to the US in 2013 for higher education, she started an eyebrow threading business. However, in 2018, state authorities shut down her salon, stating that she required a cosmetology license involving 600 hours of training, despite the course not including eyebrow threading.
Refusing to give up, Deepa filed a legal case in 2019 with the support of the Mississippi Justice Institute. Her fight led to a major legal reform in 2021, exempting services like eyebrow threading and makeup from mandatory licensing. Since then, she has expanded her business, partnered with Walmart, and her inspiring journey was recently showcased in the documentary 'Threading the American Dream' during America's 250th anniversary celebrations.
