Court Blocks Trump’s Order to End Birthright Citizenship

Court Blocks Trump’s Order to End Birthright Citizenship

US President Donald Trump’s attempt to restrict birthright citizenship for children born in the United States has suffered a setback in court. US District Judge Deborah L. Boardman in Maryland issued an injunction on Wednesday against Trump’s executive order. She said the injunction would remain in effect until the lawsuit filed by immigrant families and other organisations is resolved. Trump had earlier argued that so-called “birth tourism”, in which people travel to the US to give birth and obtain citizenship for their children, should be curbed.

Trump’s earlier attempt to restrict birthright citizenship was rejected by the US Supreme Court in June. In August, his administration issued another version of the order with some changes. Judge Boardman rejected the government’s request to allow the revised order to remain in effect while the legal challenge proceeds. The ruling marks another legal setback for the Trump administration on the contentious citizenship issue. The White House has yet to issue a response to the latest decision.
