Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has criticised the central government over the upcoming visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to India, alleging confusion within the Indian foreign affairs establishment regarding the visit. On Thursday, Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador to India, said Rubio would meet Indian government officials in Mumbai and indicated that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was expected to participate in the meetings. Reacting to these remarks on X, Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that the government should clarify the visit’s details to officials in the Ministry of External Affairs. He also made a sarcastic remark, saying he could explain the situation if asked.
Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit India next week. As part of his itinerary, he is expected to visit a Reliance facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat, before holding meetings with business leaders and government officials in Mumbai. A meeting between Rubio and Jaishankar is also likely, according to reports. Discussions may focus on the India–US strategic partnership, regional development and areas of mutual cooperation. Rahul Gandhi’s remarks regarding the arrangements for Rubio’s visit have drawn political attention ahead of the scheduled meetings.
