Delhi Water Resources Minister Parvesh Verma has made an unconventional appeal to residents, urging them to celebrate birthdays and other special occasions along the banks of the Yamuna River. The initiative aims to encourage public participation in keeping the river clean while fostering a personal connection between people and the waterway. Verma announced that he would celebrate his own birthday on the riverbank on November 7. He said the government plans to establish special huts along the riverbanks where families can gather for celebrations. These facilities could also accommodate volunteers participating in activities such as cleaning the ghats.
The minister’s announcement comes after around 35,000 people took part in the ‘Chalo Yamuna’ initiative, cleaning 70 locations along both banks of the river. Verma believes that when people develop a personal bond with the Yamuna, they are more likely to take responsibility for maintaining its cleanliness. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to clean up and develop the river. The administration has set a target of cleaning the Yamuna before the next elections, making public participation an important part of its broader efforts.
