Chandi Homam is a sacred fire ritual dedicated to Goddess Chandika, a fierce and protective form of Goddess Durga. Recitation of verses from the Durga Saptashati, also known as the Devi Mahatmyam, is an important part of the ritual. During Navaratri, which celebrates the victory of good over evil, many temples, families and groups of devotees perform Chandi Homam according to their traditions.
The ritual generally involves invoking the Goddess, chanting sacred mantras, reciting the Devi Mahatmyam and offering ghee and other prescribed materials into the sacred fire. The ceremony concludes with Purnahuti and Aarti. Ashtami and Navami are considered significant days for Goddess worship in many traditions, but the date and procedure for conducting the homam may vary according to local calendars, temple customs and the guidance of priests.
Devotees believe that Chandi Homam brings the Goddess’s blessings and pray for courage, peace, prosperity, family harmony and success in their endeavours. Collective homams also provide an opportunity for devotees to worship together and participate in prayers. Those attending should follow the organisers’ instructions and maintain safety around the fire. These benefits are rooted in religious belief, and the ritual should not be considered a scientifically proven guarantee that specific wishes will be fulfilled.
