The Central Government has taken a key decision to help control sugar prices and prevent artificial shortages in the market. From September 15, 2026, the stock limit for sugar traders, dealers and wholesalers will be reduced from 4,000 quintals to 2,000 quintals. The revised limit will remain in force until November 30, 2026.
However, the existing 4,000-quintal stock limit will continue in Kolkata and its extended metropolitan areas. The government has also prohibited traders from holding purchased sugar stock for more than 30 days. The measures are aimed at maintaining adequate market supply, preventing excessive hoarding and supporting price stability.
