Onion prices have witnessed a sharp rise across several parts of the country. Retail prices have crossed ₹50 per kg in many markets, while rates have gone above ₹60 in some states facing supply shortages. The price surge has increased the burden on consumers, prompting the Centre to take steps to improve supply and stabilise prices.
To address shortages, the central government plans to operate ‘Kanda Express’ trains to transport onions to areas facing supply constraints. The Centre will also release onions from its buffer stock to increase availability in the market and help bring prices under control.
