The Central Government is reportedly planning to revive the proposal to increase the legal marriage age for women from 18 to 21 years. The legislation, which could not be passed after the dissolution of the previous Lok Sabha, is expected to be reconsidered after the release of the 2027 Census findings.
Recent surveys indicate a significant rise in the average age of marriage among women in India, increasing from 19.3 years to 23.1 years. Officials believe these demographic trends may support the proposed legislation. However, the bill is yet to be officially reintroduced, and the government has not announced a timeline for its presentation in Parliament.
