The Central Government has issued notices to Meta regarding WhatsApp’s upcoming Username feature, asking the company to respond within three days. The government has also directed Meta to temporarily halt the rollout of the feature for Indian users until consultations are completed. The move comes amid growing concerns over the feature’s possible misuse.
The WhatsApp Username feature is designed to let users communicate without sharing their phone numbers, improving privacy. Users can reserve usernames containing 3 to 35 characters, while usernames resembling celebrities or high profile personalities are restricted. WhatsApp says the feature will help protect users' phone numbers, especially in large groups.
However, cybersecurity experts have warned that the feature could be exploited by fraudsters using fake usernames resembling trusted individuals. They also fear an increase in spam messages and online scams if adequate safeguards are not implemented. The Centre has sought clarification from Meta before allowing the feature to be introduced in India.
