Centre Gives Green Signal to Smart Traffic System in Delhi

The Union Cabinet has approved a major initiative to make traffic management in Delhi more efficient. It has cleared the implementation of an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) at an estimated cost of ₹1,789.52 crore. The system will cover 42 major traffic corridors across Delhi in three phases over 24 months. AI-based adaptive traffic signals, real-time traffic information and automated enforcement will be introduced as part of the project.

The system will also provide green corridors for ambulances and other emergency vehicles. It is designed to detect traffic congestion and accidents in real time and enable a faster response. Technology will be used to identify wrong-way driving, speeding, red-light jumping and violations involving helmets and seat belts, with automated enforcement mechanisms planned under the system.
