Centre Cracks Down on Cybercrime

The Centre has intensified its crackdown on cybercrime and online fraud, blocking more than 3,700 mobile applications identified as suspicious or linked to fraudulent activities. The Ministry of Home Affairs informed the Lok Sabha that 3,718 mobile applications had been blocked as of June 30, 2026. The measures also include blocking over 15.75 lakh SIM cards and 5.77 lakh IMEI numbers flagged for suspected criminal or fraudulent activities. Under the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS), more than 32.80 lakh complaints have been addressed, helping prevent around ₹11,158 crore from reaching fraudsters.

The government has also stepped up action against mule bank accounts used by cybercriminals to transfer stolen money. As of June 30, 2026, authorities had identified 32.08 lakh suspected mule accounts and prevented illegal transactions worth ₹25,698 crore, with support from government agencies, banks and technology partners. The Ministry said citizens can report financial fraud, fake investment schemes, digital arrest scams, fraudulent websites and app-based fraud through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. The government is also conducting awareness campaigns through SMS, television, radio and digital platforms.
