Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay paid tribute to former LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran on Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day, observed to mark the end of Sri Lanka’s civil war in 2009. Vijay expressed solidarity with Sri Lankan Tamils and stated that Tamil communities across the world would continue to remember the victims and tragedies associated with Mullivaikkal.
His remarks triggered political debate, as the LTTE remains a banned organisation in India following its involvement in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. May 18 is observed globally by many Tamils as a day to remember civilians who lost their lives during the final phase of the Sri Lankan civil war. Vijay’s statement has since drawn mixed reactions from political leaders and social media users.
