In 2005, Swedish billionaire Johan Eliasch acquired around 400,000 acres of Amazon rainforest in Brazil by purchasing a logging company that controlled the land. Rather than continuing logging operations for profit, Eliasch shut down the company’s logging activities and chose to protect the forest from further destruction.
The move helped preserve valuable wildlife habitat and contributed to the protection of one of the world’s important natural carbon stores. Eliasch’s decision also drew greater attention to the global effort to curb deforestation and protect tropical forests. The purchase represented a notable shift from commercial logging toward forest conservation.
