The much-awaited Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram has commenced commercial flight operations, marking a major milestone for North Andhra’s connectivity and development. Developed by GMR, the greenfield airport began operations around midnight on August 17, with the first commercial service departing for Singapore. An IndiGo flight from Hyderabad arrived at 6:45 am, where passengers were warmly welcomed by GMR representatives, district officials and airport staff. Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu formally flagged off the airport’s first commercial flight services and distributed boarding passes to passengers.
The airport will connect Visakhapatnam and North Andhra with major cities including Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Tirupati and Kolkata. International connectivity to Singapore and Abu Dhabi is also expected through airlines including Scoot, Air India and IndiGo. Around 31 flight movements are scheduled on the first day, with thousands of passengers expected to use the facility. Commercial operations at the existing Visakhapatnam Airport have now shifted to Bhogapuram, marking a new chapter in the region’s aviation infrastructure.
