Bengaluru’s Iconic Urvashi Theatre to Be Demolished

Bengaluru’s iconic Urvashi Theatre, one of the city’s most recognisable single-screen cinemas, is set to be demolished, bringing an end to a remarkable 55-year journey. Located on Lalbagh Main Road, the theatre opened in 1970 and became a favourite destination for generations of moviegoers. With more than 1,100 seats, Urvashi was known for its grand screen, energetic fan celebrations and screenings across multiple Indian languages.

Over the years, Urvashi became a venue associated with several major box-office milestones. KGF: Chapter 2 recorded the theatre’s all-time Day 1 record, while Baahubali 2: The Conclusion achieved its all-time grossing record. Rajinikanth also holds the distinction of having the most ₹1-crore grossers at the venue, according to reports. The demolition follows a long-running property dispute after the lease on the premises expired in 2018 and subsequent legal proceedings favoured the landowners.
