At least two Indian languages are mandatory – CBSE clarifies

CBSE has taken a key decision making the three-language policy mandatory for Classes 9 and 10. This new system will come into effect from July 2026. A circular has been issued to all CBSE-affiliated schools across the country in this regard.

As per the policy, students must study at least two Indian languages among the three languages they choose. They will also have the option to select a foreign language as the third language. CBSE stated that the main objective of this decision is to enhance students’ linguistic skills and language proficiency.
