The Andhra Pradesh High Court is set to pronounce its verdict tomorrow on petitions concerning the conduct of local body elections in the state. The matters include a petition filed by the YSR Congress Party challenging the proposed 34% reservation for Backward Classes, as well as a plea seeking postponement of the elections until the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process is completed. The court has already heard arguments in several of these matters and reserved its verdict.
Another petition seeks timely conduct of the local body elections, while a separate plea challenges the merger of certain gram panchayats with municipalities. The verdicts are expected to clarify the legal position surrounding the election process and could determine the next steps for the notification. The state government has indicated that it is prepared to proceed with the elections once the court-related issues are cleared.
