The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to approach the Supreme Court over the 34% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections. The decision follows the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s ruling striking down two government orders related to the quota. The High Court held that the reservation arrangement could take the combined reservation for various categories beyond the 50% ceiling recognised in law.
The state government has maintained that it is committed to providing 34% reservation to BCs. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to approach the Supreme Court at the earliest against the High Court order. The issue has been under judicial consideration, with the High Court previously seeking data and the legal and factual basis for fixing the 34% quota.
