The Karnataka Cabinet has decided not to recommend a pardon for Shubha Shankaranarayana, her boyfriend D. Arun Varma and two other convicts in the sensational 2003 ‘Ring Road’ murder case. In 2010, the state High Court sentenced all four to life imprisonment for the murder of Girish, Shubha’s fiancé. The matter reached the Supreme Court, which referred the issue of remission to the Governor’s discretion. The Governor is expected to announce a decision following the state government’s recommendation.
Girish and Shubha got engaged on December 1, 2003, in Bengaluru. Shubha, who was in a relationship with her senior Arun Varma, allegedly conspired with him to kill Girish because she did not want to marry him. Two days after the engagement, Girish was attacked near HAL Airport by Arun and two others using a motorcycle shock absorber. He died the following day from severe head injuries. Following a detailed investigation and a complaint by Girish’s brother, the High Court sentenced the four accused to life imprisonment. Shubha later sought a pardon. After discussing the case, the Cabinet decided that the gravity of the crime did not warrant clemency.
