Shakti worship holds a special place in Hinduism, and numerous ancient temples dedicated to the Goddess stand as symbols of faith across the world. One such prominent shrine is the Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Recognised as one of the country's most important Hindu temples, the shrine is believed to have a history spanning approximately 800 years. According to historical accounts, the temple was built in the 12th century by Ballal Sena, a king of the Sena dynasty. Goddess Durga is worshipped here as Dhakeshwari Devi, and local tradition associates the name of Dhaka city with the Goddess. Some devotees also regard the temple as a Shakti Peetha, although traditions differ regarding its identification and significance. Accounts state that the original idol was moved to the Kumartuli area of Kolkata during Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War. The temple suffered considerable damage during that period but was subsequently restored. Today, it continues to serve as an important spiritual centre for the Hindu community in Bangladesh.
The Dhakeshwari Temple is known for its distinctive architectural features, including red-brick structures, decorative carvings and terracotta artwork. Four smaller Shiva temples are also situated in the northeastern section of the temple complex, adding to its religious significance. The shrine becomes particularly vibrant during Durga Puja, when devotees gather to offer prayers to Goddess Durga, worshipped as the embodiment of divine power who defeated Mahishasura. Decorated festival structures and beautifully adorned idols contribute to the festive atmosphere. The supplied report states that Durga Puja celebrations in 2026 are scheduled to begin on October 17. Beyond its religious importance, the Dhakeshwari Temple represents centuries of devotion, cultural heritage and resilience. Its historical background, distinctive architecture and enduring traditions continue to attract devotees as well as visitors interested in the history and religious heritage of Bangladesh.
