US President Donald Trump has claimed that Google CEO Sundar Pichai did not agree with his proposal to rename the Atlantic Ocean as the “American Ocean”. Speaking at a recent event in Tennessee, Trump said he had suggested changing the ocean’s name, but Pichai reportedly advised against the idea. According to Trump, Pichai explained that oceans are different from other geographical features because they are connected to multiple countries. Trump recalled Pichai telling him that ocean-related matters were complicated and asking him not to pursue the proposal. Trump has expressed interest in renaming the Atlantic Ocean before leaving office. He also joked that someone had suggested naming an ocean after America, adding that calling it the “Trump Ocean” had crossed his mind.
Trump’s remarks come after his administration moved to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” The name change has also drawn attention to the treatment of other geographical names, including Lake Ontario, which borders the United States and Canada. According to the account in the report, Google Maps displays the revised name “Lake America” for users in the United States, while users in Canada continue to see “Lake Ontario.” Users in other countries may see “Lake Ontario” alongside “Lake America” in parentheses. These differences reflect Google Maps’ region-specific naming display rather than a universally adopted change to the lake’s name. Trump’s latest comments have once again highlighted his interest in changing geographical names to include references to the United States.
