YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy strongly criticised the coalition government over the conduct of local body elections during a press conference at the party’s central office in Tadepalli. He accused Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s government of undermining democracy by allegedly preventing opposition candidates from filing nominations for MPTC, ZPTC and municipal elections. Jagan alleged that YSRCP candidates were facing threats, preventive arrests, house arrests and attacks. He said his party had submitted evidence and complaints to the State Election Commission, the Governor and the Supreme Court. Referring to the court proceedings, Jagan said directions had been issued to ensure candidates could file nominations freely, with adequate security and CCTV recording. However, he alleged that the situation on the ground had not improved.
Jagan further alleged irregularities during nomination scrutiny and withdrawal, including the tearing of nomination papers and the alleged forgery of candidates’ signatures. He specifically referred to the case of Nagamani, a YSRCP candidate from Ward 51 in Nandyal, claiming that her signature had been forged to withdraw her nomination. He also raised allegations of attacks on women candidates, cases against party leaders and police bias. According to Jagan, no nominations were filed for MPTC seats in 101 mandals, while 70 mandals received fewer than five nominations. He demanded a transparent electoral process and equal opportunities for all candidates to contest freely. These claims were made by Jagan during the press conference and have not been independently verified.
