US Investments in Indian Securities Triple in a Decade

US investments in Indian securities, including equities and bonds, have nearly tripled over the past decade, rising from $130 billion in 2015 to $390 billion in 2025, according to data released by the US Treasury Department. India ranked 12th among the 30 countries receiving the highest US portfolio investments. The preliminary figures are part of the annual survey of US portfolio holdings of foreign securities, jointly conducted by the US Treasury, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Globally, US investors held an estimated $19.3 trillion in foreign securities in 2025, including $15.3 trillion in equities, $3.6 trillion in long-term debt securities and $0.4 trillion in short-term debt securities. The corresponding total in 2024 was $15.8 trillion.

US portfolio investments in Indian equities stood at $380 billion at the end of 2025, up from $373 billion a year earlier. Investments in Indian long-term debt securities also increased from $10 billion to $11 billion. The figures represent the market value of Indian securities held by US investors and do not include foreign direct investments in manufacturing facilities, infrastructure or other physical assets. Notably, US portfolio exposure to Indian securities was higher than its exposure to China, which stood at $318 billion. Of China's total, around $300 billion was invested in equities and $17 billion in long-term debt securities.
